ISC APPROVES $24.2 MILLION IN FUNDING TO CONSTRUCT NEW K4-8 SCHOOL IN SAGAMOK ANISHNAWBEK
[SAGAMOK ANISHNAWBEK, ON March 3, 2022] Sagamok Anishnawbek is pleased to announce that with the approval of $24,280,663 by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), a new elementary (K4-8) school will be constructed for our elementary school students. Sagamok learners can expect to begin their academic years September 2023 in their new school. A new safe and healthy school will provide the kind of quality learning environment Sagamok’s young learners need to succeed in their early studies and beyond. “What exciting news from Chief Alan Ozawanimki and the community of Sagamok Anishnawbek as their new Kindergarten to Grade 8 school is one step closer to reality. This new school will provide a safe and modern learning environment in which the community’s youth can learn and grow.” The Honourable Patty Hajdu Minister of Indigenous Services A new school will better meet the educational needs of young learners and families in the Sagamok community by providing more quality, functional and safe spaces for its’ growing number of young learners—and especially for those that need extra supports to succeed. “The construction of the new elementary school in our community reflects the growing requirements that we have as a community. This begins with our children and youth. The general rural population trend across the country reflects a decline in natural growth. However we have one of the fastest growing populations and our requirements reflect that. Our future depends on promoting an environment conducive to learning in a way that reflects both modern curriculum and Anishnawbe Aadziwin, who we are as a people. I extend deep appreciation to all who have been involved over the years that led us to this exciting announcement as we will witness our dream becoming reality. We will continue to watch over our children in their formative years and witness with pride, their growing successes.” Gimaa Alan Ozawanimki Sagamok Anishnawbek The new 2,829 square meter facility will be 40% larger than the existing Biidaaban Kinoomaagegamik school that was built in 1985 and feature a gymnasium, cafeteria, library, science room and quality, functional spaces for high-needs learners to thrive. Its’ size is ideally suited for a school enrolment of 201 students, meeting the recommended ISC School Space Accommodation Standards (2016). Students will now have the space and tools they need to learn all under one roof. The new school will be constructed in the lot next to the Elders Eagle Lodge and provide opportunities to enhance our children’s educational experiences through close exposure to our language, stories , teachings and wisdom of our Elders.
