INFORMATION FOR BIIDAABAN KINOOMAAGEGAMIK FAMILIES FOR SEPTEMBER 7, 2021 REOPENING

The 2021-2022 school year begins on Tuesday September 7, 2021, with a regular school day schedule (refer to 2021-2022 Biidaaban Kinoomaagegamik School Year Calendar). We welcome all students back to school for in person learning with health and safety measures in place. As learning is in person, no action is required for returning students. The online learning option we are offering is the “hybrid learning” model where your child will join their classroom virtually from home daily. Please contact the Principal if this is an option that you are considering.

To assist the Public Health Unit’s ability for contact tracing we will be requesting parents of students and staff their vaccinated status upon further direction from Public Health and Sagamok Leadership. Immunization is strongly recommended by Public Health Units, and we are advised that many of our youth have already received their first dose. Unvaccinated students and staff may experience longer periods out of school if they experience one symptom listed on the Biidaaban Kinoomaagegamik screening tool.

As mentioned earlier, many of the health and safety measures are in place as last year, there are some changes, thus this information sheet is intended to provide clarification on several school related topics. If you have any questions after reviewing this information sheet, please contact the School Principal – Rebecca Toulouse.

SCREENING

All staff and students must self-screen each day before attending school. Provide your screening form to screeners (before entering the school bus and designated school site) and screeners will complete screening with a temperature check. Any staff persons or students who are experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID 19 must not attend work/school. Further instructions will be provided by the Principal on next steps on a case-by-case basis. All visitors will be screened on site before access to classrooms.

MASKS

All students riding the School Bus or Van are required to wear properly fitted non-medical or cloth masks, including bus drivers and screeners. Students in Early Learning classrooms (JK & SK) are encouraged but not required to wear masks indoors. Students in Grades 1 to 8 are required to wear masks in all indoor spaces. All Staff are required to wear medical masks with additional PPE i.e., googles or face shields. Masks may be temporarily removed indoors to engage in some physical activities in the classroom or to consume food or drink. All visitors are required to wear medical masks within all indoor spaces. The Education Unit provides medical and non-medical masks at the school and on buses/van for replacement purposes.

HAND HYGIENE AND RESPIRATORY ETIQUETTE

Hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette are among the most important protective strategies to teach our children. We will continue, with your support and encouragement, to provide and reinforce good hand hygiene practices throughout the day, including the use of approved hand sanitizer on site and on buses and school van.

RECESS AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Students do not need to wear masks outdoors during recess or outdoor activities. Social distancing is still encouraged as much as possible. Shared materials (i.e., sports equipment) outdoors are permitted, with appropriate hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Staff are encouraged but are not required to wear masks outdoors.

CLEANING AND DISINFECTION

We will continue to maintain our enhanced cleaning practices in the school, which includes cleaning and disinfection at minimum twice a day in all classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, office, shared and staff spaces, particularly of high touch surfaces.

SHARED MATERIALS/SHARED SPACES

The use of shared materials is permitted, as items such as manipulatives for math, books, computers, art supplies and gym equipment are important to learning. The Ministry of Education guideline advises that the risk associated with transmission is low, thus an on-going focus on hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette will continue, to reduce the risk of infection related to shared equipment. Similarly, shared classrooms, library, lockers/cubbies are permitted. When different classes cohorts interact in shared spaces, masking and as much distancing as possible is to be maintained between class cohorts.

LUNCH AND OTHER FOOD PROGRAMS

Nutrition/third party food programs and non-instructional food events (i.e., Pizza day) are permitted to operate, and food handlers must use adequate food handling and safety practices. Staff and students are permitted to leave the school for lunch and/or breaks.

ASSEMBLIES

School assemblies or other student/school gatherings are permitted by divisional separation (i.e., primary – junior division) only.

VISITORS

We will continue to limit visitors in the school to reduce exposure and disruptions. Any visitor to the school must screen and wear a mask while on school premises. All visitors are required to log in and out for tracking purposes.

SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION

School buses will operate at full capacity. The seat directly behind the bus driver will remain empty to maintain distancing, but distancing may not be applicable to other vehicle types such as vans or cars. Non-medical and/or cloth masks are required for all students riding buses and school van. Assigned seating will remain in place to assist with contact tracing. Enhanced cleaning practices will continue for all school buses and school van.

As further public health guidelines or information becomes available on curriculum specific activities such as day/field trips; sport specific activities; or after school programs will be addressed as soon as possible.

I trust that the information provided addresses the immediate health and safety concerns in welcoming your child(ren) back to school.
