~ April 21, 2020 ~

We recognize that solid waste and recycling collection and disposal services are vitally important to the protection of our people’s health and the continued health of our environment.  We are working hard to ensure that we are able to maintain the services so critical to our community while protecting our employees from exposure risks.

At this point, there has been no disruption to weekly waste and recycling collection services provided to the Sagamok Anishnawbek community.  We continue to provide curbside collection of Residential Recycling on Tuesdays, Commercial Recycling on Wednesdays, Residential Waste on Thursdays and Commercial Waste on Fridays.   Residents and business are reminded to have their materials to be collected at the curbside in suitable containers by 7:00am on collection day.

We ask that our residents also do what they can to help protect our employees and ensure the continuity of our community’s waste collection services.

Respect Physical Distancing     Sagamok residents are asked to respect social distancing imperatives and remain at least 2 meters away from our waste and recycling workers as they are working to keep our community clean and safe.

Households with Sick Members     Anyone who is sick and in isolation are asked to place all the waste that they may have come into contact with into the garbage and refrain from placing them into the blue box.  This includes water bottles, food and product packaging.

Households in Self-Isolation     Some residents may be self-isolating for 14 days due to recent potential exposures to the COVID-19 virus.  To help protect the safety of our waste collection staff, Sagamok residents are asked to either store their recyclables until the isolation period has ended (preferred) or dispose of recycling with regular garbage waste in a tied bag on their regular garbage collection day (Thursdays for residences).

Contained Waste     Residents are reminded that only materials that are bagged and tied will be collected.  Zero materials will be picked up by our collection workers unless properly bagged and tied.  No loose materials will be picked up.  Residents are advised that they are responsible for their own debris clean-up in the event that their waste is disturbed by animals.

Clean Recycling      Residents are reminded that only clean, recyclable materials are accepted for collection.  If any of the following items are found in a blue box by our collection workers, none of the contents will be collected:  Kleenex, tissues, sanitary wipes (baby wipes, alcohol wipes), food waste or medical waste of any kind (sharps, gloves, face masks, medication).

Please note that while these items are never accepted in our blue boxes, there will be zero exceptions made during our COVID-19 Community Response to ensure the protection of our workers and the continuation of the essential service of waste collection to the Sagamok community.
