Economic Development

Small Business Support and Services are available to members of Sagamok Anishnawbek. These include;

  • Advisory and Referral Services
  • Marketing or Research for your business
  • Small Business Grant Program
  • Tools of the Trade Grant
  • Self-Employment Assistance program
  • Business Plan Templates or Samples

Small Business Grants up to a maximum of $10,000 (per individual/project) based on percentage of project costs (either 5% or 30%).

Tools of the Trade up to a maximum of $1,000 (per individual/project).

Self-Employment Assistance Program are for band members starting a new business may be eligible for support from the Self Employment Assistance (SEA) Program, which provides a weekly allowance for up to 40 weeks.

The applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements;


  1. Be a registered member of Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation
  2. Business must be owned and operated fulltime by the applicant on the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation
  3. Not have any outstanding loans or in account default with the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation
  4. Not have received a Tools of the Trade within the past three (3) years
  5. Not have received a Business Grant within the past five (5) years.
  6. Applicants cannot be an employee of Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation or the Sagamok Development Corporation.

Application Process

  1. Client completes and submits the following items;


  • Client Data Form
  • Consent Form
  • Business Proposal Application Form
  • One page letter detailing need
  • Proof of Self Employment or Contract
  • Updated Resume
  • Quotations which include address, phone number and contact person.
  • Proof of Equity of 5 or 20 % of the total project costs


  1. Upon receipt of a complete and viable application, the client may be requested to submit a completed business plan.
  2. The Economic Development Officer will conduct an initial review of the business plan’s viability. If all of the required information is submitted, a recommendation will be prepared for the Board of Directors to review and approve.
  3. The following program will be based on availability. If approved a letter of offer will be sent to successful applicant indicating the amount and terms and conditions of the grant.
